Apple macOS Golden Gate
Changes to security that impact BrightSlide
Table of Contents
What has changed?
Apple have made a significant change in their release of macOS Golden Gate. From version 27 onwards, add-ins such as BrightSlide can no longer be installed in the Office sandbox:
UBF8T346G9.Office
A sandbox is an area of the file system dedicated to an app. Office is developed by Microsoft and BrightSlide is developed by BrightCarbon. The two apps are no longer permitted to share the same room.
What this means for you
You're either a seasoned BrightSlide pro, or you've just discovered it as a new user. This is what you need to do in each case:
PRO
Features that make use of the file system may no longer work. There is currently no workaround. And because we can no longer access the location where the files were previously installed you'll need to manually uninstall BrightSlide, keeping copies of important files like your custom animations. Go to section 1 to do this. And then once the BrightSlide update is available (check the product page regularly), come back to section 2.
NEW
The installer currently fails because it's now blocked from writing the BrightSlide files to the Microsoft Office sandbox. You'll need to wait for the new version of BrightSlide which supports the Golden Gate release. Jump to section 2.
Section 1 - Uninstalling BrightSlide
If you have BrightSlide installed and you've updated your Mac to Golden Gate 27 and onwards, some features will stop working. These include the My Animations feature, Export tools, Quality Check, dynamic ribbon icons, auto software updates.
To address this, you need to uninstall the old version before installing the new version as follows:
STEP 1 – unload the add-in
- Start PowerPoint.
- From the top men bar, click Tools / PowerPoint Add-ins…
- Select BrightSlide in the dialog that opens.
- Click the [—] button followed by OK.
STEP 2 – backup your animations file
- Start Finder.
- Press shift+cmd+g to open the Go to folder dialog.
- In the dialog that opens, copy and paste this path:
~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content.localized/Add-Ins.localized/BrightCarbon/BrightSlide - Make a copy of the MyAnimations.pptx file in a safe place.
STEP 3 – deleted the add-in
- Start Finder.
- Press shift+cmd+g to open the Go to folder dialog.
- In the dialog that opens, copy and paste this path:
~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content.localized/Add-Ins.localized/BrightCarbon - Select and delete the BrightSlide folder and all its files.
